AI Agents Are Becoming the New Attack Surface and MSSPs Aren’t Ready

Security was built for humans, but most of the managed security service providers’ (MSSP) customer environments today are run by machines. The API calls are valid, identities are authenticated, and workflows behave “as configured.” The real risk emerges from the interaction graph, not from any single event flagged as anomalous by the MSSP’s security information and event management (SIEM), endpoint detection and response (EDR), or user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA). 

When Normal-Looking Activity Becomes Dangerous 

Most MSSP detection pipelines are tuned for deviations from the normal, such as unusual logins, abnormal traffic, strange process trees, or out-of-policy changes. But when threat actors operate completely through valid credentials, governed workflows, and legitimate APIs, nothing “abnormal” can be detected.

Two shifts make this especially challenging:

But they often do not know whether those interactions created a reachable path to critical assets, broke a trust boundary, or enabled persistent compromise.     - Which combinations of configuration, permissions, and workflows create viable endtoend paths from an initial foothold to crownjewel assets?
    - Under what conditions does “normal” AI agent behavior become a viable exploit vector?

    Answering these requires correlating identities, APIs, configurations, and workflows into an attack graph, then continuously validating which paths are realistically exploitable. Instead of treating each vulnerability or misconfiguration as a separate ticket, MSSPs need to understand how they compose into chains that attackers or misaligned agents can automate.

    - Which AI agents and API integrations are truly highrisk
    - Which exposures are mostly noise because they are not meaningfully exploitable
    - Which specific design or control changes will collapse the highestimpact paths .

    The Shift From Identifying Issues To Validating Exploitability 

    For MSSP leadership, the strategic pivot is to move from “we detect more things” to “we validate what can actually be exploited and help you eliminate those paths.”
